Super Mario Maker 2 retains No.1 for a second consecutive week as Nintendo Switch games impress across the UK Top 40.
The game's No.1 performance is strong, with just a 47% fall in sales from its first week. The title keeps itself ahead of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, which drops 45% in its third week in the charts (but holds second place).
F1 2019 maintains No.3 (despite a 57% fall in sales week-on-week), while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues its rise up the charts, moving from No.4 to No.5 with a 9% increase in sales week-on-week (that's three racing games in the Top Five).
No.5 is another Switch fast climber, with Super Smash Bros Ultimate jumping five places after a 21% increase in sales performance. The fourth Switch game in the Top Ten is a return for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which makes No.9... despite sales actually falling 9%.
Further down the charts, Super Mario Party (+1%), Super Mario Odyssey (+14%), New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe (-11%) and Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu (-1%) all rose up the charts, although some of those titles did drop slightly in sales. Broadly, handheld games tend to be more resilient in the summer months when game sales take tumble, with consumers picking up portable devices to play on their summer breaks.
Physical sales for Xbox One and PS4 games are quite slow at this time of year, and as a result some simple pricing activity and promotion can make a major difference to some chart placings. Mortal Kombat 11 has jumped 14 places to No.10 following a 32% sales bump, whereas Minecraft has jumped from No.22 to No.13 thanks to just a 6% sales improvement.
FIFA 19 is also on the brink of a Top Ten return following its drop to No.20 this week, with a 14% rise in sales week-on-week (up to No.11).
Last week's new games took quite a sharp drop. The Sinking City sunk from No.37 to No.12 after a 60% drop in sales in its second week (which in itself isn't a terrible performance). While Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, buoyed last week by the Switch version, fell from No.9 to No.34 with a 62% drop in sales.

Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have written a joint letter in opposition of a proposed 25% tariff which would affect, among numerous other products, video game consoles.
The tariffs, proposed in May, are the Trump administration's response to a growing trade dispute with China. Gaming categories affected include video game consoles, game controllers, and coin-op arcade games.
The joint letter, which was posted on June 18th, is signed by Microsoft VP, deputy general counsel Linda K. Norman, Nintendo of America general counsel and executive VP of business affairs Devon Pritchard, and Sony general counsel, senior VP, legal and business affairs Jennifer Liu. It begins by expressing support of the ESA's request to remove a broad range of video game-related tariffs from the final list, then specifically outlines the hefty impact that console tariffs could have on the gaming industry in the US, requesting that they especially be taken out.
"In particular, tariffs on video game consoles would injure consumers, video game developers, retailers and console manufacturers; put thousands of high-value, rewarding U.S. jobs at risk; and stifle innovation in our industry and beyond," the letter opens.
"While we appreciate the Administration's efforts to protect U.S. intellectual property and preserve U.S. high-tech leadership, the disproportionate harm caused by these tariffs to U.S. consumers and businesses will undermine-not advance-these goals."
The letter notes that in 2018, over 96% of video game consoles imported into the United States came from China, and that moving even a small part of console making supply chains out of China would be disproportionately challenging and expensive (though it was reported earlier this month that Nintendo has already pulled at least some of its production out of China in response to the tariffs). It argues that since consoles are sold under such tight margins, the 25% tariff would inevitably be passed onto consumers. This, it continues, would dramatically impact the $43 billion dollar US gaming industry (and by extension its more than 220,000 employees) especially as it approaches the 2019 holiday season.

The games industry is only "paying lip service" to concerns around gaming addiction, according to Addictive and Immersive Technologies Inquiry chair Damian Collins MP.
His comments came following today's hearing of the inquiry at Westminster which saw representatives from King Digital, UKIE, TIGA, the Video Standards Council, and the British Esports Association give evidence.
Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz following the session, Collins accused the industry of "waiting to be told what to do by others rather than having a standard of its own in regards to loot boxes and excessive playtime.
"I don't think the industry is engaging with these topics directly, and that's what's been certain to us throughout the inquiry," he said.
"I think the concerns are real, particularly around gaming addiction... The consistent message we've had from the big game companies is this is not something they proactively monitor themselves."
Last week's session saw executives from Electronic Arts and Epic Games squirm under scrutiny from the committee.
Today's session provided an opportunity for the British games industry in particular to address growing concerns around gaming addiction, with UKIE CEO Dr. Jo Twist saying she would like to see more academic research done into the issue.
However, these comments rang hollow for Collins, who said the situation is "exactly the same as the debate about Facebook and other big companies as well."

Major discounts on the Borderlands games has seen the last two titles in the franchise leap to the top of the charts before and during E3.
In fact, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel has scored two weekly No.1s in a row, whereas Borderlands 2 made No.2 the week before E3, dropping to No.3 a week later.
Borderlands 2 also received new DLC last week as a means to set-up events for the upcoming Borderlands 3 in September. It all bodes well for the launch of 2K's upcoming title.
The Pre-Sequel rose 350 places during the week ending June 9th to take the top spot, and held the position for a second week.
Borderlands 2, meanwhile, rose 254 places to No.2, but was overtaken by Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege for the week ending June 16th.
There were lots of discounts flying around the digital space before and during E3, which have significantly transformed the charts. For the week ending June 9th, Sony's price activity saw Spider-Man rise from 105th place to No.5, God of War jump from No.173 to No.10, and Detroit: Become Human go from No.293 to No.15.
This continued into the following week, with Spider-Man taking No.4, God of War holding No.10 and Detroit rising to No.13.
Microsoft held a similar sale which resulted in Forza Horizon 4 go from No.102 to No.23 for the week ending June 9th, and Sea of Thieves leap from No.83 to No.25. In the following week, Forza Horizon 4 rose further to No.17 (in which new Forza DLC was released featuring LEGO), whereas Sea of Thieves slipped slightly to No.29.
Other games that rose up during E3 week included Watch Dogs 2 and The Sims 4. New Sims content was featured at E3, while Watch Dogs 2 sequel Watch Dogs Legion was revealed.

Having dominated the charts for the past two summer, Activision is aiming for a hat trick with the chart-topping debut of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled.
The revamped racing game launched at No.1, and enjoyed the second highest week one sales in the history of the franchise (the record-holder, of course, is the N Sane Trilogy).
It's actually the third best launch of the year so far, behind Sony's Days Gone and another remake, Resident Evil 2. It outsold the next biggest game of the week, FIFA 19, by almost eight times as many copies.
Crash Team Racing also far outsold rival title Team Sonic Racing, with more than four times as many copies sold in week one. Interestingly, the audiences differed somewhat -- 66% of Crash buyers are on PS4, while only 40% of Sonic's customers were on Sony's console. However, Switch made up 39% of Team Sonic Racing's launch sales, but only 16% of Crash's.

Everybody wants a piece of the action. That's the dominant sentiment around the videogame market right now -- a sense that the world's biggest companies have turned their attention on this sector, and they're all quite determined to make sure that they play a key role in its future.
Of the "FAANG" tech giants whose rapid growth (and occasional instability) has fuelled much of the stock market's movements in recent years -- that's Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google to the uninitiated -- only Netflix doesn't have a confirmed interest in getting a foot in gaming's door. Even at that, nobody would really be shocked if Netflix boss Reed Hastings were to announce tomorrow that the company is going to make a bigger push behind interactive titles or creating games that link to its other IPs as a cross-media effort.
Add in Microsoft (currently the world's largest company if measured by market capitalisation) and China's Tencent, both of which have a very significant interest in the gaming sector, and you've essentially got a who's who of the world's richest and fastest-growing companies -- all of them with their sights set on gaming. For all that Sony and Nintendo have been knocking it out of the park in recent years, it's easy to feel a little uneasy about the company they suddenly find themselves in. Even the likes of Sony starts to look like a bit of a plucky underdog when it's got Google and Amazon ramping up to compete against it.

Though we still have a long time to go before launch sales will prove the effectiveness of long-running marketing campaigns that included E3, the week itself has brought in a solid showing of pre-orders for two games in particular: Cyberpunk 2077, and Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Data gathering and analysis company Thinknum shared sales rankings from GameStop and Amazon's games category from June 10 through 14, with the two games as notable standouts at each respective retailer.
A few caveats to keep in mind: not every game shown at E3 2019 is even up for pre-order at the moment. The data also begins on June 10, the day Cyberpunk 2077 first went up for pre-order (along with a number of other titles), whereas Microsoft and Bethesda both had their press conferences the day before.
Aside from Cyberpunk 2077 and Final Fantasy VII Remake, some of the games that first appeared for pre-order during this period include Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Just Dance 2020, Elden Ring, Doom Eternal (the day before, June 9), Watch Dogs Legion, Dying Light 2, Tales of Arise, Gods & Monsters, Marvel's Avengers, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Luigi's Mansion 3, and a number of others.
With that in mind, Thinknum lists the "average category rank" for sales items over those five days. At GameStop, Cyberpunk 2077 is the clear leader, with the Cyberpunk 2077 Collector's Edition sold by CD Projekt Red on top at an average rank of 1.75, and a secondary edition of the game sold by WB Games in the third spot (2.25 category rank).

The power of price promotions continues to shape the retail charts as PlayStation titles dominate the Top Ten.
Sony's Days of Play sale kicked off before E3, cutting the price on key first and third party sales, as well as hardware bundles. As a result FIFA 19 rose back to No.1 for the first time since January.
With the promotion running throughout the last week, FIFA 19 remains at the top of the charts, thanks in part to its inclusion in discounted PS4 hardware bundles. The footy title even saw a 53% boost in sales week-on-week, have already rose by 18% the previous week.
Meanwhile, Days Gone holds on to No.2 with a 35% lift in sales, while a 45% rise keeps Marvel's Spider-Man at No.3.
Elsewhere in the Top 10, PlayStation VR Worlds rose from No.10 to No.7 with a 56% sales boost, while a 8% dip in sales sees Blood & Truth drop to five places to replace it.

The global games market is expected to bring in $152.1 billion in revenue for 2019, largely driven by the continued rise of mobile gaming and a strong console install base as the PS4 and Xbox One near the end of their life cycles.
Newzoo has published its annual Global Games Market Report for 2019, in which it projects the state of the industry for the year, as well as issuing predictions for the industry three years down the road in 2022. The report is based on consumer research surveys of 62,500 invite-only respondents across 30 countries. Those 30 countries in total represent 90% of all global game revenue.

May 2019 was far from an earth-shattering month for the US games industry, according to NPD's regular report.
Per NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, overall spending across hardware, software, accessories, and game cards was down 11% year-over-year to $641 million last month. Year-to-date spending didn't fare much better, down 3% year-over-year to $4.7 billion.
Both hardware and software saw overall declines, while accessory and game card spending stayed steady. Hardware took the biggest hit, down 20% year-over-year to $149 million. Year-to-date spending dropped 17% year-over-year to $1.1 billion. These declines are possibly due to the approach of the next console generation, with Sony revealing the first details of its next console last month and rumors of what would eventually be the official unveiling of Project Scarlett at E3 2019.
The Nintendo Switch remained the only hardware platform that saw growth as the best-selling console of May and the continued victor year-to-date both in terms of dollars and units.
Accessories and game card spending brought in $230 million, with year-to-date sales up 3% to $1.4 billion.
In software, Mortal Kombat 11 took the top spot for the second month in a row, which also allowed it to surpass Kingdom Hearts III as the best-selling title year-to-date. It's worth noting that Kingdom Hearts III is still the second best-selling title of the year, despite not appearing anywhere in the Top 20 for the last three months.

Of all the games either revealed or confirmed during E3 2019, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is currently leading pre-orders at GameStop, with Pokemon Sword and Shield following.
GameStop has revealed the top ten games by pre-order that were revealed at E3 2019, out of over 200 different game announcements. It's worth noting that GameStop's definition of "confirmed" is a bit loose here, as almost every game on the list below had already been confirmed or shown in some capacity ahead of E3, in some cases months beforehand.
The following are the top ten games by GameStop pre-order that were shown during E3 week:

A new GamesIndustry.biz study shows that, perhaps unsurprisingly, the most prominent event in the gaming calendar is dominated by violence.
Of the 239 games we have counted as being featured at E3, only 42 can be considered non-violent -- 21% of all titles on show this week.
Of the 42, only 17 (7% of the 239 total, 40% of all non-violent games) are from major publishers or platform holders. This includes eight ID@Xbox titles and one Square Enix Collective title -- games developed by indies but published by larger companies."Much of the industry's output relies on selling the same fundamental mechanic: the ability to fight and kill"
But what counts as violent? For the purposes of this study, we're focusing on violence as an action by and around the player. This means our requirements for a non-violent game are:
- No title where you are required or encouraged to harm or kill another living entity.
- No title with graphic or realistic depictions of violence.
- We have also discounted cartoon violence, e.g. Luigi slamming ghosts into walls also discounted or disassembling enemies Lego Star Wars. The purpose is to identify games where the central mechanic is not death.
- Reference to unseen violent acts, e.g. a game where you are solving a previous murder, does not count as violent.
- Minimalist depictions or representations of conflict, e.g. a Hearthstone-style card game, do not count as violent.
- Sports games with tackles do not count as violent, as this is not intrinsic to the game or required to win. However, sports that centre around a combative act, e.g. boxing or wrestling, are considered violent.
- Games in which you give direct orders that lead to violence, e.g. strategy titles or turn-based RPGs, are considered violent.

Last week, we shared the the first ever UK digital charts, compiled by GSD, which featured Total War: Three Kingdoms at No.1. Team Sonic Racing topped the GfK retail chart, but when comparing the two reports, it was clear that Total War: Three Kingdoms was the overall best-seller.
We have sort of a reverse situation here where the digital charts actually cement the victory seen in the retail charts. Blood & Truth was the first VR game to reach No.1 in the GfK rankings, but only reached No.3 in GSD's digital chart. However, combining the sales from both confirms the PlayStation VR shooter was the best-selling game in the UK that week.
In fact, Blood & Truth's combined sales beat those of Grand Theft Auto V by around 3,000 units.
Elsewhere, we once again see discounting playing a role in shaping the charts as Ubisoft's Watch Dogs 2 rockets up 171 places to No.5 and EA Sports UFC up 157 to No.8. A reduction on indie WWII shooter Battalion 1944 also puts it in the Top 10.
The GSD chart is created from data supplied directly from publishers and developers, whereas the GfK chart (which covers the physical market) is created from data supplied directly from retailers. GfK's chart typically arrives on Monday, whereas the GSD data takes longer to compile. It's also worth noting Nintendo's digital data isn't currently taken into account.

Think of the most personally exciting things you've seen from this year's E3 so far. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that "on-demand game streaming" is not among them.
Despite that, when the E3 show recaps are written this Friday, the push for streaming services will doubtless be among the top stories, right up there with Keanu Reeves and that sequel/remake of that classic game you loved. And when we look back on E3 2019 in years to come, Stadia, Project xCloud, and Orion may be the most industry-shaping things shown here.
It's certainly understandable. The biggest industry shifts aren't always the sexiest ones. I recall no chants of "digital distribution" during the Microsoft press briefing of E3 2005."In many ways E3 is about building hype, but streaming is a difficult thing to build hype for"
Of course, streaming is in a different position than digital distribution was back then. It has the potential to be just as disruptive, but it also has deep-pocketed backers, powerful companies putting plenty of money behind their own attempts to disrupt the status quo to their own advantage.
When it came to digital distribution, the big players were comparatively timid. They were publicly ambivalent about how customers would get their games, perhaps in deference to the concerns of retail partners. They tinkered with it as a side business, rolling out Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and WiiWare not as alternative ways to buy retail games but as entirely separate catalogs of smaller original experiences.
On the other hand, it looks like the streaming companies are going to push more aggressively to have streaming as a direct competitor/alternative to non-streaming purchases for customers. When Stadia launches, it will feature new games like Doom Eternal, Ghost Recon: Break Point, and Borderlands 3. Microsoft hasn't said much about the particulars of Project xCloud, but it's widely expected to integrate with the Xbox Game Pass in some way, which already gives subscribers Microsoft's biggest AAA blockbusters and a selection of indie titles on day one.

The competitive landscape that underlies the entire gaming industry is shifting at a pretty dramatic pace. Remember how once upon a time, Mario and Sonic appearing side by side -- Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, specifically, a 2007 Wii title tying in with the following year's Beijing Olympics -- seemed like the exclamation point at the end of an era, a resoundingly final confirmation of the new industry status of two formerly implacable rivals?
Lately, those moments feel like they've been coming thick and fast. Sony is working with Microsoft on cloud gaming services. Cross-play between platforms is edging towards becoming standard. Microsoft bought Minecraft, and promptly doubled down on its support for other manufacturers' platforms. And there are fairly substantial rumours flying that the Xbox game streaming service will be available on Nintendo's Switch, perhaps even on Sony's hardware."There's an understanding that the real competition for gaming isn't from other platform holders"
This week brought another striking image which confirms that the platform wars as we've known them for over a decade are all but over. At the keynote presentation at Apple's WWDC developer event, the firm announced new controller support for its Apple TV and iOS devices, promptly illustrated with images of the Xbox One and PS4 controllers. Soon you'll be able to pair Sony and Microsoft's ubiquitous gamepads to an Apple TV, an iPad or an iPhone and play games directly on the device -- a move that, one imagines, must have come with the blessing of the respective platform holders.
The substantive impact of this change will be significant for many users, of course -- especially in terms of the large back catalogue of older console titles which have been ported to iOS and will be vastly more functional with the help of a decent controller. It might also be a decent shot in the arm for gaming on Apple TV more broadly, which had some promise at the outset. The devices are very popular and surprisingly capable as a gaming platform, but they have been seriously hampered by a number of issues, including somewhat unenthusiastic backing from Apple itself and the lack of a decent standard controller.
When games first appeared on the system, Apple spent a while insisting that every title had to be controllable with the Apple TV's remote. This rule was dropped relatively quickly but did a fair bit of damage to the gaming potential of the diminutive box nonetheless. The capacity to link up an Xbox or PS4 controller to the Apple TV doesn't fix all the problems, but it should at least draw some much-needed attention to a gaming ecosystem that's got a surprising array of decent quality titles.

Sony has set a release date for its long gestating film adaptation of Naughty Dog's Uncharted video games.
The Uncharted film will be released on December 18, 2020, according to The Hollywood Reporter -- the exact same day as Steven Spielberg's remake of West Side Story.
Uncharted's hero, Nathan Drake, will be played by Tom Holland, a British actor best known for playing Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At 23 years-old, Holland is younger than the character of Nathan Drake in even the first Uncharted game, suggesting that the film could be an origin story.

Sony's recently launched Days of Play price promotion further demonstrates the impact of discounts on the retail charts as FIFA 19 reclaims the top spot.
It's the first week EA's bestselling sports title has been UK No.1 since the first week of 2019, and comes off the back of an 18% week-on-week boost in sales.
FIFA 19 was also one of the titles included in some of the PlayStation 4 hardware bundles Sony has been pushing this week, so its return to No.1 may well coincide with a boost in PS4 sales.
The Days of Play campaign runs from June 7 to June 17, conveniently overlapping with E3 -- perhaps to keep the platform holder's wares prominent given the platform holder is absent from this year's event.

Big budget PS4 VR exclusive Blood & Truth is the best-selling game of the week at UK physical retail.
Excluding digital sales (more on that later in the week), the PSVR title beat FIFA 19 to No.1 by just 400 copies. FIFA enjoyed a boost in sales this week, boosted -- no doubt -- by the all-English Champions League final.
Blood & Truth is the first VR game to achieve such a feat, and it could well be the second VR hit from Sony's London Studio. The first game, PlayStation VR Worlds, has been packed in with the PSVR headset, and is by far the best-selling VR game in the UK.
Last week's No.1, Team Sonic Racing, dropped 46% in sales to No.3. It's a strong result for Sega's game, which continues to outpace its critically loved original.
But it was an incredibly tight chart this week. In fact, just over 6,000 copies separated No.40 and No.1 in the charts this week.

A new online test has been launched to help better identify the effect of gaming disorder.
The condition was recently classified by the World Health Organisation, and now a team of academics from the UK, China and Australia have compiled a test that will generate data for a more extensive study into the disorder.
Spotted by Eurogamer, the test -- entitled 'Do I play too much videogames?' -- takes about 20 minutes to complete and asks various questions about the user's gaming habits. They are given a score out of 20 upon completion, with five or more indicating higher tendencies towards gaming disorder.
The test also offers suggestions as to what is motivating the disorder in that particular user, such as competitiveness, and also scores these out of 20.
Users must be at least 12 years old to take part, and must have permission from a legal guardian if they are under 16. The test is voluntary but the data it generates will contribute to the team's scientific study, which will be published at a later date.
Lead researcher Dr Bruno Schivinski said the purpose of the test and its associated study is "to understand the point at which gaming becomes a health problem", as well as the factors that contribute to it.
Gaming disorder, as defined by the WHO, refers to "a pattern of behaviour characterised by impaired control over playing games, to the extent that playing them takes precedence over other interests and daily activities."

Ubisoft has no desire to make "a sequel" to Rainbow Six Siege to accommodate the next generation of consoles, according to the game's brand director, Alexandre Remy.
Speaking to The Daily Star, Remy addressed the concern that new hardware from Sony and Microsoft will "segregate" the communities that have formed around service-based games.
"We don't want a sequel whatsoever," he said of Rainbow Six Siege, which has steadily grown since its December 2015 launch, and now has more than 45 million registered players.
"The reason behind this is we don't want to segregate our community between the different platforms. In an ideal world tomorrow, we'd love players from every platform to be able to play together. We are approaching next-gen with the same spirit."
Ubisoft doesn't want players that upgrade to new console hardware to have to buy another copy of the game. The cost of doing so could be brought down through, "backwards compatibility," Remy said.
"I'm not sure exactly how you'd be able to deploy this, and we're just having a conversation the first parties (Sony and Microsoft)," he added.
